Google makes significant enhancements, known as core updates, to its overall ranking procedure several times per year. These updates are meant to enhance the overall relevance of search results, making them more useful and helpful for everyone. On May 25, 2022, Google released a broad core update, the May 2022 core update. The update will fully roll out within 1-2 weeks after its release.
What is a Google Broad Core Update?
Since this update will change the way some websites appear on search result pages, digital marketing experts and webmasters should keep a check on their Google rankings over the next few weeks.
Now, what is different? Well, Google never exactly specifies what it has updated in order to prevent the users’ attempts to scam the system. However, it gives a general overview of the updates by stating that:
“Core updates are changes we make to improve Search overall and keep pace with the changing nature of the web. While nothing in a core update is specific to any particular site, these updates may produce some noticeable changes to how sites perform.”
According to Google, “Some sites may note drops or gains during them. We know those with sites that experience drops will be looking for a fix, and we want to ensure they don’t try to fix the wrong things. Moreover, there might not be anything to fix at all.”
It further explains that this core update does not target a specific site or page. Instead, it is about improving the way their system evaluates content overall. If a site performs less in this update, that does not mean that it has violated Google’s webmaster guidelines or is subject to manual or algorithmic action (as happens to those who do violate those guidelines). Likewise, these changes may improve the performance of several previously under-rewarded pages.
In simple words, the SEO performance of your website may suffer even if you have not done anything wrong. And if you are lucky, you might notice an increase in Search referrals as a result of this update.
So, if you notice any change in your rankings, just know that it is due to the core update, and you cannot do anything about it!
