
Microsoft is pushing Windows 11 deeper into artificial intelligence, with new taskbar features that let AI agents live inside the operating system, run in the background, and surface their status without opening a full app. The company says the goal is to turn Windows into an “agentic OS,” with the taskbar becoming the main launch point for agents, Copilot, and related productivity tools.
Taskbar becomes the front door for AI agents
In Microsoft’s latest Windows 11 plans, the taskbar is no longer just a place to pin apps or search files. It is becoming a hub for what the company calls AI agents, including Microsoft 365 Copilot and third-party options. These agents are intended to act like assistants that can carry out tasks on a user’s behalf, from research to file access and admin work.
“This is all about us wanting to make sure that every user can get the superpowers of AI,” says Navjot Virk, corporate vice president of Windows experiences, in an interview with The Verge. Windows chief Pavan Davuluri framed the change as a deeper platform shift, saying, “This integration isn’t just about adding agents; it’s about making them part of the OS experience.”
According to Microsoft, users will be able to ask an AI agent to handle a task and then let it continue working in the background. The agent will move into the taskbar while it runs, and users can hover over the icon to check progress. Microsoft says the experience is designed to feel more integrated with Windows rather than like a separate app launching in the foreground.
Ask Copilot combines search and agent launching
The new agent access is tied to Ask Copilot, a taskbar feature that merges local file search with Copilot functions. Virk said the feature is intended to deliver “lightning-fast search for files and settings,” while also letting users start a conversation with Microsoft 365 Copilot and launch AI agents directly from the taskbar.
Microsoft is also adding visual status cues so users can see what agents are doing at a glance. The company says taskbar icons will show badges indicating activity, including a yellow exclamation point when an agent needs help and a green tick when a task is completed. If an agent requires attention or finishes a job, it will notify the user and update its state on the taskbar.
For interaction, Microsoft says a floating window will appear instead of a full app window. The idea is to keep agent access lightweight while still giving users a way to monitor or intervene when necessary.
Opt-in by design, Microsoft says
Despite the broader push toward AI inside Windows, Microsoft says the taskbar agent experience will not be forced on users. “These experiences are designed to be opt-in, we want customers to have full control over when and how they engage with Copilot and these agents,” says Virk.
That emphasis on control appears to be part of Microsoft’s messaging around Windows AI features more generally. The company is positioning the system as a mix of local and cloud-based capabilities, with some functions running directly on Copilot Plus PCs and others relying on Microsoft’s cloud models.
MCP and a new agent workspace
Microsoft says a key piece of the platform work is Model Context Protocol, or MCP, which it is using to embed agent capabilities into core parts of Windows. Davuluri described MCP as a standardized framework that lets agents discover tools and other agents through “a secure managed on-device registry.” He said it also gives the Windows team a way to provide tools that agents can consume inside an agentic framework.
The company is also creating a separate workspace for AI agents. Davuluri called it “a contained policy-controlled auditable execution environment,” adding that it gives agents a place to operate with software in a way that is analogous to how people work. Microsoft described the agent workspace as a sandbox, with each agent operating using its own Windows account.
Security is a clear motivation here, but so is caution about reliability. Since AI models can make mistakes, isolating their activity from the main Windows session could help reduce the risk of errors affecting the user’s day-to-day desktop.
Copilot is spreading across Windows and Office
The taskbar changes are only one part of Microsoft’s broader effort to make Windows an “agentic OS.” The company is also bringing Copilot into File Explorer, where users will be able to summarize a document, ask questions about files, or draft emails based on a document’s contents.
Virk said the goal is “to make it even more convenient to get highly contextual and deeper Copilot help in Windows surfaces that you already use a lot, like the File Explorer.”
Other AI updates are on the way across the Windows and Office ecosystem:
- Click to Do on Copilot Plus PCs is being improved so users can turn tables from the web or elsewhere on their PC into Excel documents.
- Writing assistance is entering preview, with tools to rewrite and compose text in any text box in Windows 11, including offline support on Copilot Plus PCs.
- Outlook is getting AI-generated summaries.
- Word is getting automatic alt-text for images in Office documents.
- Fluid dictation is in development for Windows, with speech-to-text output that includes correct grammar and punctuation.
Hybrid AI: local, cloud, and Windows 365
Microsoft’s recent announcements make it clear that it is leaning into a hybrid model for AI in Windows. Some features run locally on Copilot Plus PCs, while others use cloud-powered Copilot models. That combination shows up in Windows 365 as well, where cloud PCs accessed through Windows 11, a web browser, or mobile apps include Copilot Plus features and Microsoft’s main cloud Copilot capabilities.
The company appears to be building a tiered approach: local AI for speed and offline capability, and cloud AI for broader assistance and more advanced tasks. That split is central to how Microsoft is now framing Windows experiences.
More than AI: security and IT updates at Ignite
Microsoft’s Ignite conference is also bringing several IT-focused changes. Hardware-accelerated BitLocker is planned for next year and will require next-generation Windows devices built on unannounced chips. Davuluri said, “Hardware acceleration of BitLock requires the capability in the silicon platform,” adding that “As and when those capabilities are available, the OS will be able to unlock them for users.”
Sysmon functionality is set to be integrated into Windows in early 2026, making security events available in the event log and simplifying management for security teams. Microsoft is also rolling out a visual refresh for Windows Hello and new passkey manager integration that works with Microsoft Password Manager in Edge, 1Password, and Bitwarden.
For Microsoft, the message is that Windows is becoming more than a desktop operating system. With agents in the taskbar, Copilot in File Explorer, and AI features spread across Office and Windows 365, the company is recasting the platform around assisted work, background automation, and a tighter blend of local and cloud intelligence.
